Facebook was launched in February 2004, still with the name facebook. It is currently the largest social network in the world, with 845 million active users in December 2011. The original idea was to make the site available only to students at Harvard University, where founder Mark Zuckerberg and his friends studied. The service was later expanded to students at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Boston University, and other institutions. The Facebook story was told in the film The Social Network (2010).
