The PM9E1 is an SSD from Samsung that takes performance very seriously. The new model has a capacity of up to 4 TB. But its main attraction is the sequential data read rate: 14.5 GB/s (gigabytes per second), with the data write rate reaching 13 GB/s.

To give you an idea of what these numbers represent, the previous SSD, called Samsung PM9A1, reaches 7 GB/s and 5.2 GBs of sequential data read and write rates, respectively.

One of the factors that explain the Samsung PM9E1’s performance gain is the implementation of an eight-channel PCIe 5.0 interface. The storage capacities of 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB are the result of Samsung’s eighth-generation V-NAND technology (although the ninth generation is already ready).

In time, V-NAND (Vertical NAND) is the name of a technique that increases the storage capacity of each storage chip by “stacking” cells. The eighth generation of the technology works with 236 layers of cells.

According to Samsung, the new SSD features a 5nm controller that improves the unit’s energy efficiency. In practice, this means that the PM9E1 will improve the battery life of the notebook that contains it, for example.

Samsung also hints that all of these attributes make the SSD suitable for computers capable of running AI tasks locally. It wouldn’t be surprising if it appeared in a Copilot+ PC to be released in the coming months, then.

Samsung PM9E1 Availability and Pricing

For some reason, Samsung published a note about the PM9E1, but later deleted the post. The model only became known because sites like TechPowerUp published the note in full.

In any case, Samsung has not released the prices of the PM9E1 line, nor has it given any information about the release date. This is because, probably, the new SSDs will only be supplied to PC manufacturers and corporate applications. Consequently, it is unlikely that we will find the novelty in retail.

In the note, Samsung only reported that it had already started mass production of the new units.
