Xiaomi’s first car has a Snapdragon chip and range of up to 800 km

Xiaomi has revealed complete information about the Xiaomi SU7, an electric car that marks its debut in a new market. This time, the manufacturer showed the look and specifications of the vehicle, which will be sold in two versions: SU7 and SU7 Max. The latter is the premium model, faster, with greater range and all-wheel drive. The launch took place in the early hours of today.

CEO Lei Jun had already shown that the SU7 would use the HyperOS system (the same as the brand’s smartphones). Taking advantage of the smartphone hook, Xiaomi didn’t make the mistake of leaving the panel with just a touchscreen. Customers will be able to control the air conditioning using physical buttons and there is also the option to add more buttons to the panel. The SU in the name stands for Speed Ultra, while the number 7 in China is associated with luck — the pronunciation of the name, soo-chee, is also fluid and easy to say.

The Xiaomi SU7 system uses the Snapdragon 8295 chip (Qualcomm), developed for vehicles. The car’s central dashboard screen has 3K resolution (yes, that exists) and measures 16 inches. Here we already have part of the integration of HyperOS devices, which allows you to mirror the Xiaomi smartphone directly on the panel — which can be divided into three windows.

Xiaomi SU7 came to fight with Porsche and Tesla

Despite the design that mixes the look of Chinese rival BYD’s cars, the side of the Mercedes wheels and the size of a BMW, the Xiaomi SU7 has as rivals the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Tesla Model S — which also had their look adapted in the Chinese car.

Xiaomi claims that the SU7 Max has superior acceleration than electric sedans from Porsche and Tesla, doing 0-100 km/h in 2.78 seconds. The German brand says that the Taycan Turbo reaches this speed in 2.8s, while the Tesla Model S, according to the manufacturer’s website, does this in 3.1s — however, the Model S Plaid, the most powerful version of the model, surpasses it the SU7 and does 0-100 in 1.99s, also according to Tesla.

Xiaomi hired engineers from BMW and Mercedes to develop the car, which helps explain some similarities

The SU7 Max, if it were a smartphone, would be the Xiaomi 14 Pro: both are the most premium versions of their lines. The SU7 Max has a range of 800 km, a maximum speed of 265 km/h and its fast recharge provides 220 km of range with a five-minute charge. This is thanks to the battery that supports 800 V. The “entry-level” SU7, with a range of 668 km, has a 400 V battery.

Xiaomi just hasn’t released the prices of its cars. However, as Lei Jun stated that the goal is to surpass Tesla, the Xiaomi SU7 is expected to cost something in the price range of US$80,000, approximately the same value as its rival Model S. Its official launch should take place in 2024.
