What happens if you don’t use Airplane Mode during a flight?

Airplane Mode is a feature created to allow cell phones and other devices to be used in flights, based on the assumption that telephone, Wi-Fi and other signals could interfere with the aircraft’s embedded systems. Although they have never proven this claim, operators have their own procedures for dealing with users who want to use their devices while travelling.

What happens if you don’t use Airplane Mode on the flight?

There is no proven evidence that a cell phone can interfere with an airplane’s in-flight systems. Therefore, your device will not cause a catastrophe.

This does not mean that there are no consequences for the passenger: this is because most airlines have not yet implemented changes in their procedures and prefer to act conservatively on wireless connections.

So, the old “let’s go…” is still common practice.

However, not all companies operate in the same way.

And it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules of each one, for example, LATAM.

LATAM

LATAM does not allow the use of any electronic equipment during takeoffs and landings, and gadgets that do not allow Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth to be turned off cannot be used. Cell phones, tablets and notebooks, only with Airplane Mode active and with the aircraft in the air. Laptops that use Bluetooth controllers, such as Nintendo Switch, are not allowed.

always have common sense

Even if the flight rules of both national and international agencies allow you to use your cell phone, always use common sense and always follow the instructions of the flight attendants: if you are asked to turn off the device, turn it off.

After all, it is better to have peace than to be right. It’s not worth getting into trouble for that.
