It was released on April 1, 2004 and offered 1 GB of space, a value far above competitors such as Hotmail, which allowed only 2 MB of storage in free accounts. This fact made many users think that it was another of the typical “April Fool Day” pranks from Google. Gmail caused controversy by automatically reading keywords in the user’s private emails to show personalized ads.
