Phone 16: what to expect from the iPhone 15’s successor

The iPhone 16 will be unveiled by Apple next month. The big tech giant is expected to announce its next phones at the event scheduled for September 9. Several pieces of information about the iPhone 16 have already been released, including a new design for the “cheaper” lines, a new lens for the Pro models, and artificial intelligence — a key component to rival Samsung.

Apple Intelligence: the AI of the iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will support Apple Intelligence, a generative AI technology for the big tech company’s smartphones. The feature will arrive in iOS 18, the default operating system for the new smartphones. However, the AI features will only be available for the iPhone 16 Pro in October — one month after the phone’s launch.

The availability of Apple Intelligence for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus is not yet certain. This depends on the SoC of the devices. If they use the same processor as the Pro version, the A18, it is certain that all Apple Intelligence features will work on the base iPhone 16 and Plus.

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus with iPhone X and XR look

Since last year, leakers have been claiming that the non-Pro iPhone 16s will have an iPhone X/XR-style camera design — vertically aligned lenses. This appears to be the most accurate rumour about Apple’s upcoming smartphones. Leaked renders and mockups (used by accessory makers) have revealed the return of this design for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

“What about the look of the Pro versions?”, you might be asking. Well, there’s nothing new here. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will continue with the three cameras forming a triangle.

Action button for everyone

The action button, which debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro replacing the silent mode switch, could be on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. The feature could also receive a new feature: it will be a touch button, but with a vibration motor to give the sensation of pressing and having a response.

This is the same as what happens with “button iPhones,” where pressing the Home key gives a tactile response. While we’re at it, it’s worth mentioning that the action button should arrive for the iPhone SE 2025.

New 48MP ultra-wide camera?

There’s a chance the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will get a new 48MP ultra-wide lens. According to Jeff Pu, Apple will once again update the cameras on the “ultra-premium” iPhones. This would give the triple-lens setup two 48MP sensors (wide and ultra-wide) and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens — a maximum zoom of 5x.

Bigger battery for everyone but the iPhone 16 Plus

In February, a leak reported that the entire lineup will come with larger batteries — except for the iPhone 16 Plus. The rumour, published by the same leaker who leaked the phone mockups, talks about a 6% increase in the battery capacity of the iPhone 16. The 16 Pro Max model will have a 5% larger battery. Charging speed, even with USB-C, will continue to be tied with the Galaxy A54.

iPhone 16 line colors

The leaked mockups of the iPhone 16 suggest that we will see less saturated colours in the line. The public reaction in the Tecnoblog community was not good. However, the deal is to accept it. More rumours say that Apple will adopt these stronger tones in its devices, including the bronze colour in the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which may be called “desert titanium”.

The other colours, according to rumours, are:

  • Black
  • Green
  • Rose
  • Blue
  • White
