ChatGPT gains search engine to compete with Google and Bing

OpenAI has started releasing the web search engine for ChatGPT. Subscribers to the paid ChatGPT Plus and Team plans will have access to the feature starting this Thursday (October 31st), as well as those who were signed up for the SearchGPT waitlist . Users of the free, corporate and educational plans will receive the new feature in the coming weeks.

The search engine works on the web, in smartphone apps and on desktops. It will automatically appear according to what the user requests, if the tool deems it relevant to bring up-to-date information. Even so, you can also search manually by tapping the search icon.

How will ChatGPT do searches?

In the announcement post, OpenAI says its search engine allows people to ask questions in a more natural and conversational way, without having to do a lot of research or searching. The developer also says that ChatGPT will consider the context of the conversation to come up with the best answer.

To provide the best information, OpenAI has partnered with content providers. They appear when users ask questions about weather, stocks, sports, maps, and news.

In the latter case, sites such as Reuters, Financial Times and Associated Press, with whom OpenAI has struck content licensing deals in recent months, serve as sources.

While ChatGPT will only provide summarized answers, it will also show you which websites the information was taken from. The pages will appear in a sidebar on the web and desktop interface.

Google already uses AI, and Meta could be next

Synonymous with web search in recent decades, Google has been investing in artificial intelligence to maintain its position. This is the case with the so-called AI Overviews, summaries generated by AI with the main information found about the user’s search.

On the other hand, even those who have never been very interested can enter this area. Meta would be preparing a search engine, according to sources heard by the website The Information, for Meta AI, present on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
