Apple appears to be keen to popularise the use of MagSafe in its upcoming products. A filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows a possible iPhone with a MagSafe port for power. The images were released on Wednesday (3) and suggest that the company is paving the way for retiring the Lightning connection, which is quite old.
In the documentation, Apple shows a three-pin charger similar to the one found in previous MacBooks. In addition to the version with round pins, the company is also revealing another model with a flat surface.
The device receiving the charge is not identified as an iPhone, but the images, once again, suggest it is an iPhone: note the flat sides that the brand has adopted again in the iPhone 12 line and the MagSafe contact point.
In the future, Apple may shift its strategy away from the current MagSafe (on the back of the device) for accessories and external battery packs in particular. In doing so, it may replace the Lightning connection with MagSafe on the bottom of the phone.
